Mandhry Mosque, situated in the heart of Old Town Mombasa, Kenya, is one of the oldest mosques in the region, with a history that dates back to the early 16th century.
Located near the coastline, this mosque is a testament to the rich cultural and architectural heritage of Mombasa, reflecting the influence of Swahili, Arabic, and Persian designs.
Established around 1570, during the era when the coastal region was a crucial hub for trade between the East African coast and the Middle East, India, and beyond.
The mosque was built by Sheikh Musa bin Mujahid, a prominent figure in Mombasa’s history, and has since been a significant religious and cultural landmark.
The mosque’s historical importance is further underscored by its continuous use as a place of worship for over four centuries, serving as a spiritual center for the local Muslim community.
It has witnessed various historical events and transitions, including the Portuguese occupation, Omani rule, and British colonial period, each leaving an indelible mark on its cultural landscape.
